The northern and southern parts of the United States were very different back in the 1800s. The Northerners and Southerners were different economically and also socially.

Northerners-

  • cattle
  • mining
  • railroads
  • invented the telegraph
  • textiles

Social-
  • children abused in factories
  • formed unions
  • factory workers were mostly immigrants
  • outlawed slavery


Southerners-

Economic-

  • cattle
  • cotton
  • lumber
  • tobacco
  • mining
  • rice
  • iron and steel
  • textiles
  • grain
  • plantations

Social-
  • became more dependent on the northern industry
  • believed in slavery
  • if a slave tried to escape they either killed or beat him/her
